NFL football rules the roost.
Mike Paulus and Lance Nelson are your hosts.
Mike spoke to Lance about his dietary habits and ingesting a product called Sugared Donuts instead of something healthy.
Introduction – Brady discussion, Lance’s take last week. The Rubes spoke and declared it the Terrible Take but Lance refused to agree. Manning, and Montana, had health concerns. But, Lance’s take was that Buffalo would win the division because the Patriots traded Garoppolo. That’s the terrible take anointed by the Rubes. Lance denied them, but keeps trying to justify the bad take.
Lance spent numerous minutes justifying his take that Bret Favre is a Top 5 all-time top NFL quarterback. The Rubes argued about this and decided that next week they would compile their lists of the Top 5 GOAT NFL QBs for next week’s show.
Mike disclosed some Reddit findings about Alex Smith. The Kansas City Chiefs fans can’t see the forest through the trees. Afraid to make a change. They don’t realize Smith can’t get it done. They are happy with good enough, but need to make a bold move to maximize their potential this year, and it’s starting Mahomes. Reid is getting to where it’s too late to make the change. Needs to be before the next game, or he will have to ride it out and Chief’s fans will be disappointed again with an early playoff exit.
3 things we know for sure:
Scotty’s Terrible Take – Scott has been trying to justify how great Teddy Bridgewater is by texting all of us a list of quarterback rankings of notable QBs in the NFL. You have many of the existing starting NFL quarterbacks, and Scott says Bridgewater is slightly better than Matt Ryan and should be #8 on the list. Except, Bridgewater isn’t anywhere on the list.
Mike asked a question of Lance: you said you’d cut in where my Martellus bennet take was a Lock of the Week, but you never did. Why? Answer – Lance realized he was wrong and was hoping Mike wouldn’t call him out for it.
A little NCAA college football before we get into previewing Week 10 of the NFL season. This upcoming Saturday night may be the best night of college football in history.
The Notre Dame against Miami Hurricanes game looks to be the game of the year.
NFL Playoff predictions post Week 9 games:
Top seed: Pittsburgh then New England Patriots
Home wildcard: Chiefs and Jaguars
Wildcard: Raiders and Titans
Top Seeds: Pittsburgh Steelers #1 and Kansas City Chiefs #2. Lance thinks the Patriots are going to falter and the Chiefs have the tiebreaker against the Patriots.
Home Wildcard: New England and Tennessee Titans
Wildcard: Buffalo Bills and Oakland Raiders
Lance says the Jaguars will not make the playoffs due to Brutal Blake Bortles.
Top Seed: Eagles, Rams
Home wildcard: Saints, Vikings
Wildcard: Panthers and Cowboys
Top Seed: Eagles and Minnesota Vikings at the #2 seed.
Home wildcard: Rams and Saints
Wildcard: Carolina Panthers and Detroit Lions
NFL Preview Week 10:
Mike Worst matchup – Giants at 49ers is a no brainer, but Garoppolo might play so it has some intrigue. I think the least watchable game is Packers at Bears. Lance disagrees, and says this is the top rivalry of all time. Mike questions if anyone is watching it this year, seeing it is such a meaningless game. Mike states the Packers are on the play-doh slide.
Lance Worst matchup – he selected the Giants at 49ers because of their combined win totals.
The Rubes discussed how they each picked a Houston Texans wide receiver last week as the top fantasy WR, but then Deshaun Watson immediately got hurt.
Mike Top Fantasy TE – Eric Ebron. Cleveland can’t so much as find the TE during a game, much less defend the position.
Lance Top Fantasy TE – Evan Engram from the New York Giants.
Last week shot in the dark, Lance called the Washington upset of Seattle Seahawks in Seattle.
Lance Shot in the Dark – Miami upends Carolina in Carolina. 9 point underdogs on the road. Cutler will light up the Panthers. Mike had this game as well, so changed it on the fly. He ended up picking Denver beating New England in Denver with Brock Osweiler as the new starting quarterback.
Locks of the week –
Mike 3-0 last week. Lance went 0-2-1. Mike with a massive lead!
Mike: LA Chargers at Jacksonville (-4): it feels like the easy pick is Chargers here, because Jacksonville is so inconsistent and they are coming off a big win, but I like Jacksonville and think they’ve figured it out since their bye week. Take the Jaguars and give up the points.
Lance – Tampa Bay home against the JETS. New York is favored, but he picks the JETS to win outright. Mike agrees.
Mike - Road favorite time! New York Jets only giving up 2.5 points at Tampa Bay? Take the JETS. They have proven to be a good running team with guys who are coming off the lines strong. Tampa is going the wrong way and maybe sitting Winston? Evans is out too. Is this a joke. Jets all day.
Lance – Seattle are posers and won’t make the playoffs. Cardinals will go into Seattle and Arizona will win with the 6 points. Take Arizona and the points. Mike pointed out that the game is in Arizona, not Seattle.
Mike - Green Bay completes their meltdown in what will be Hunley’s final start at QB. Chicago is favored by 5 at home and they will cover.
Lance – Minnesota Vikings will go into Washington as 1.5 point favorites and will win and cover. Vikings will win by 3-6 points.
NFL season is in full swing!
Mike Paulus and Lance Nelson are your hosts.
Rube Sports Radio Episode #13
Intro: Rube Mike discussed what the college choice process has been like for his son, a high-school sophomore. Some of the material these colleges send out is laughable.
NFL Midseason Review:
AFC South – Mike: not sure how Tennessee is tied for first, they seem to be a hot mess. Hottest team is Houston, but the Jags are exciting too. Best young division in football right now. Lance: the entire division should be 4-3. Onlt one team will come out of this division because they are mediocre.
Lance doesn’t think the Jaguars are going to make the playoffs!
AFC East – Lance: opened by talking about the Garoppolo trade to the 49ers. He says the division is taking a downturn and he believes Buffalo Bills will win the division now that the Patriots traded their backup quarterback. Mike supports the trade because of the contract issues with Garoppolo, but Lance didn’t understand. Lance thinks they should have traded Tom Brady.
Lance predicts the Buffalo Bills will win the division.
Mike: the Bills are keeping things interesting, but this is the Patriots division to lose, and I don’t see that happening.
AFC West – Mike: the Kansas City Chiefs have a tentative hold on this division as long as Alex Smith is at quarterback. Mike demanded again for Coach Reid to bench Alex Smith. Lance suggests that Mike stop talking about it. However, Lance is only looking at paper and doesn’t see the problems on the horizon like Mike does. The Broncos have fallen apart.
AFC North – you could put the bad news Bears in this division and they would have a chance to win it.
Lance says Pittsburgh will run away with what is a really weak division.
NFC South – Lance: he is surprised the Saints are in it. Looking like a tough division. It’s a 2 team playoff division but he isn’t sure which two teams will make it.
Mike: New Orleans Saints are coming on hot, but the Panthers are going to start figuring it out and the Falcons may do the same. Mike thinks the Panthers will end up winning the division and that the Falcons won’t make the playoffs.
Lance thinks Cam Newton is overrated.
Mike re-stated that Dirk Koetter should be fired and that he won’t make it through the season. He doesn’t think someone who has proven that he can’t run a successful program shouldn’t get another chance when there are so many good coaches out there waiting for their first chance.
Lance says Dirk will not get fired.
NFC East – Lance and Mike agree that the Philadelphia Eagles “all day”. Cowboys fighting for a wildcard spot.
NFC West – Mike: I’ll go with Rams, best team in the NFC West. Seahawks picked up a Houston OL. 49ers got Garrapolo. Rams in a tight one. Division will be better next year. Lance: least competitive division in the NFL. Cardinals have lost Carson Palmer and Seattle is a house of cards. Goff will fall apart as the year goes on.
NFC North – Mike: easiest division in football. Packers without Aaron Rodgers, Bears with a rookie starter averaging only 16 points a game, The Lions who can’t win at home. How do the Vikings NOT win this division despite their own offensive ineptitude? Lance: the NFC North is toughest because the division is tied for the most total wins. Lance tried explaining the opponent records of the Vikings opponents by removing losses to the Vikings. The entire scenario made no sense, and Lance claims there is no difference in playing at home versus on the road in the NFL.
Lance says the AFC East is the most competitive division in all of football, then followed by the NFC North and the NFC South.
Zach Miller injury: both Rubes send their best to Zach and his horrific leg injury that resulted in arterial damage.
Scott’s Terrible Take – Phil Olson from Brainerd made a take that said Mike would be laughed at when Desean Watson is exposed in Seattle. Then, Watson proceeded to put up video game stats against the Seahawks.
QB Jones is back from an extended absence due to Phlebotic Oresis. He provided an on site report from the Florida Marlins training facility where is dug deep into the World Series baseball controversy. QB, during his report, threw one of the baseballs in question and suffered an injury. It wasn’t until later in the show that the Rubes found out QB dislocated his elbow and will be out of commission for a bit. Wish him the best.
World Series discussion (5.5 Hour game?!?)
Must win: Lance: Lance picks Carolina and Atlanta. Mike: Atlanta at Carolina Panthers. The Rubes agree!
Top fantasy WR – Deandre Hopkins. One of the top QBs against one of the league’s worst passing defenses. Both Rubes picked this, but Mike didn’t want to agree with Lance again so he quick like changed his pick to Will Fuller V.
(it turns out it was the wrong pick by both Rubes because Desean Watson tore his ACL the day after this episode was recorded)
Lance put out an appeal for a psychiatrist to give Mike an evaluation because his love for Watson is weird.
Shot in the Dark – Mike: Arizona doesn’t win another game this season. Lance: Seattle is hosting Washington, and I think the Redskins will beat the Seahawks.
Locks of the week:
Lance claims that Mike picked Martellus Bennet leading fantasy tight ends as a Lock of the Week, but Mike stated it had been a shot in the dark. Lance said no and that he would cut the clip into this show (which Lance didn’t do because he was wrong).
Lance: Tennessee favored by 5.5 over the Bengals. Take Tennessee Titans.
Mike: Denver at Philadelphia (-8), Philly upgraded its run game with Jay Ajayi (whose fantasy value is now off the charts) will have the game of his life and Philly rolls, easily covering the 8 points.
Lance – tenn at home. Take Tennessee.
L.A. Rams (-3) at NY Giants – Lance always claims that Vegas loves the road favorite. Nobody knows what he’s talking about, but roll with the road favorite here. Giants suck. Take the Rams to cover.
Lance – Buffalo going to the Jets. -3, take Buffalo and give up the points.
Mike: Kansas City at Dallas – pick em. Dallas might be without Ezekiel (finally) and it’s a pick ‘em. Great game. Dallas squeaks one out over the crumbling Chiefs. Vegas doesn’t know who will win this game, but Mike does.
Lance: Oakland (-3) going to Miami. The Raiders will figure it out and roll the Dolphins. Take Oakland and give up the three points.
Rube Sports Radio Episode #12
NFL is amazing.
Mike Paulus and Lance Nelson are your co-hosts.
Recap of trips:
Lance – traveled to Las Vegas with big plans to interview Rubes and get a bead on the Raiders’ move there, but all he did was take a photo in front of In and Out Burger.
Mike – traveled to Notre Dame and watched the Irish manhandle USC. Nobody expected it besides Mike, which everyone hears later in the show during an actual interview Mike recorded before the game. Surprisingly, Mike becomes Lane’s life (and sports) mentor as he helps guide him through how to be successful.
Scotty Terrible Take – Lance is first of the Rube co-hosts to be given the status of having a Scott’s Terrible Take. Lance came out during the week with a horrendous take about Andrew Sendejo’s hit on Mike Wallace. Lance declared it was a legal hit and there’s should not have been a flag. Since then, Sendejo was fined and suspended a game, providing further proof that Lance has a terrible sports mind.
Speaking of a birdbrained act, Vontaze Burfict – intentional contact to the head cannot be tolerated.
Martavis Bryant – last week girlfriend tweeted that Steelers weren’t using him correctly, and this week he throw JuJu Smith-Schuster Pac12 product) under the bus. Coming off a one-year suspension for non-stop Mary Jane usage.
Lance explained it all by throwing the millennials under the bus and blaming it all on them. Mike stood up for them.
Both Mike and Lance nailed their guaranteed wins last week.
Mike nailed the top fantasy performer at QB, Derek Carr. Lance was way off with Drew Brees.
Locks of the week: Mike 1-2, Lance 1-2 We are still tied.
Most Important match-up:
Mike - Dallas Cowboys at Washington Redskins. Mike thinks this will be the most telling match-up between a rejuvenated Cowboys team.
Lance – Denver at Kansas City. Denver is dropping off in performance and Kansas City has dropped a couple. The winner of the game would have the bead on a number one seed in the playoffs.
Top Fantasy Running Back –
Mike: Jay Ajayi breaks out against a crappy Baltimore team on Thursday night.
Lance: Joe Mixon of the Cincinnati Bengals.
Shot in the Dark –
Mike: Cleveland defeats Vikings in London. Londoners hope it’s true, because they’ve been seeing some horrible matchups and they need some excitement. Cleveland is a 9.5 point dog.
Lance: 5.5 point underdog Houston going into Seattle and Houston wins.
Locks of the Week:
Lance: he goes with an Over/Under and he took the over on the Minnesota Vikings versus Cleveland Browns game even though the agreement was to pick games and not over/unders.
Mike: Chicago at New Orleans – Saints are favored by 9 points. Chicago hasn’t proven much on the road, and New Orleans have a bit of a resurgence since they laid an egg in the first couple weeks. Look for Drew Brees to have a field day. Take the Saints and give up the points.
Lance: Dallas (-2) going into Washington. Take Dallas to cover and run rough-shot over the Redskins.
Mike: San Francisco at Philadelphia – there is zero drama in the game. Take Philly in a run away and give the 49ers the 13 points.
Lance: Oakland at Buffalo. Oaklands is 2.5 point favorites on the road, and Lance likes the Raiders a ton. Take Oakland and give up the points.
Mike: It’s almost too easy picking games this week, so I’m going to challenge myself. An improving LA Chargers team visits a defenseless Patriots squad in New England and gets 7.5 points. Chargers have an offense that can keep pace. Take San…sorry, Los Angeles and the 7.5 points.
